The Black 14's stand against discrimination and their courage to promote social justice in sports remains profoundly relevant today. With political and social divisions growing more intense, their legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that activism can have—even in challenging times.
Just as Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists in 1968 and Colin Kaepernick took a knee in 2016, the Black 14 courageously took a stand against racial discrimination. Their story highlights the importance of using platforms for social change, especially now as issues of racial and social justice remain at the forefront of national conversation.
The Black 14's bravery has been recognized by major media outlets, including CBS Sports, CNN, ESPN, and the Washington Post. In 2017, Spike Lee executive produced a documentary on their story, underscoring their legacy of activism that continues to inspire.

THE IMPACT
"Before Kaepernick, there was the Black 14" - ESPN
The Black 14's story is a powerful testament to courage, resilience, and the enduring fight for justice. In 1969, fourteen Black student-athletes from the University of Wyoming football team took a stand against racial discrimination. These young men, whose team had a winning record and was nationally ranked, were unfairly dismissed for simply asking to wear black armbands in a peaceful protest during an upcoming game. They sought to stand in solidarity with the Black Students' Alliance, advocating against discriminatory practices that restricted opportunities for African Americans.
Their dismissal sent shockwaves nationwide, sparking a debate over civil rights in sports and igniting conversations about racial justice that are still relevant today. Their bravery led to lasting change – within a year, their opponent added its first Black player, and nine years later, the policy they protested was overturned.
Today, the Black 14 Foundation works to honor this legacy by advancing social justice, supporting education, and empowering young people to stand up for what is right. Your support can help us continue their mission, ensuring that their story not only lives on but also inspires future generations to create a fairer, more inclusive world.
