The Black 14's Statement on Wyoming Legislature's Decision to Defund DEI

In 1969, The Black 14 risked their football careers and educational opportunities to champion social justice, civil rights, and inclusion. Now, in the face of the State of Wyoming's decision to defund DEI, The Black 14 reaffirms their dedication to these core American principles.

The recent decision by the Wyoming Government to revoke funding for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives not only erodes the legacy of The Black 14 and the efforts of the University of Wyoming but also sets a concerning precedent for DEI initiatives nationwide.

DEI initiatives are crucial for creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students. It is imperative that universities prioritize these initiatives to ensure that every student feels valued and supported. Without proper funding and support for DEI programs, universities risk alienating marginalized communities and hindering the progress of their students. The experiences and perspectives of individuals from different backgrounds enrich our communities and enable us to create a more comprehensive understanding of the world. The Black 14 firmly believes that everyone deserves equal treatment and opportunities, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or other characteristics.

The Black 14, in partnership with the University of Wyoming, initiated the remarkably successful Black 14 Social Justice Summer Institute in 2019. The initiative received backing and was housed in the University's DEI department. The Institute brought high school students from around the country to Laramie to learn about the four domains of social justice; Identity, Diversity, Action and Justice. The program acknowledged the influence of student-athletes in bringing together individuals from various backgrounds and upheld the legacy of The Black 14.

The Black 14 is immensely proud of the partnership with the University of Wyoming and our impact with the Black 14 Social Justice Summer Institute over the years. However, the Black 14 Social Justice Summer Institute’s fundamental values and objectives are intricately tied to DEI. The program cannot effectively realize its mission without ample backing and a robust DEI department. Consequently, The Black 14 has decided to discontinue its involvement in the Social Justice Summer Institute at the University of Wyoming.

The Black 14 remains resolute in advancing diversity and inclusivity through various means, such as community engagement, educational programs, and partnerships with other organizations that share our vision. We are dedicated to working towards a better future for our communities and future generations.
